Umrao Jaan (1981) is a
masterpiece by director Muzaffar Ali. It is based on the Urdu novel Umarao Jaan
Ada by Mirza Hadi Ruswa. It is tragic story of a Lucknow courtesan. Rekha gave
her career best performance in the lead role which won National Award for Best
Actress. She was nominated for Filmfare award too. The film won three other
National awards along with two Filmfare awards.
I like the movie for Rakha’s acting which is outstanding and the marvellous poetry of Shahryar. Asha Bhosle is at her best too with the great music from Khayyam. Both won National awards for the same.

There are many songs
in the movie that I like. My favourite is ‘In akhon ki masti’.
