Umrao Jaan (1981)

Umrao Jaan (1981) is a masterpiece by director Muzaffar Ali. It is based on the Urdu novel Umarao Jaan Ada by Mirza Hadi Ruswa. It is tragic story of a Lucknow courtesan. Rekha gave her career best performance in the lead role which won National Award for Best Actress. She was nominated for Filmfare award too. The film won three other National awards along with two Filmfare awards.

I like the movie for Rakha’s acting which is outstanding and the marvellous poetry of Shahryar. Asha Bhosle is at her best too with the great music from Khayyam. Both won National awards for the same.

There are many songs in the movie that I like. My favourite is ‘In akhon ki masti’.

Umrao Jaan  

Anand (1971)

Anand is one of the finest movie of Indian cinema. It is written and directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Rajesh Khanna gave his best performance in the title role a larger than life role of a cancer patient who lives a life of bliss and happiness for others while he himself feel sorrow and loneliness. 

Amitabh Bachchan in the supporting role was quite impressive too. Johnny Walker gave a commendable performance in a small but significant role. Other notable supporting performances were by Lalita Pawar and Dara Singh.

Excellent music of the movie was from Salil Chaudhary and lyrics were written by Yogesh and Gulzar. A beautiful poem of Gulzar ‘Maut tu ek kavita hai’ was narrated by Amitabh Bachchan.
